Breakfast

I have not had yogurt or other dairy products for a few weeks now and I can tell no difference in my eye problems. This weekend I bought a container of plain Dannon yogurt. The ingredients are listed, as required, and there is only one listed, which is milk. I've decided that since I can buy a quart container for $2.50, I'll just do that for now. I've been making my own yogurt for about two years but the reason I started making it was because of the iffy ingredients in most of the yogurt. I love the Greek yogurt but am much too thrifty to buy it regularly.

This morning I had a cup of yogurt topped with cinnamon, bite sized pieces of a tangerine, and a tablespoon of chia seeds. It was so delicious.

My husband eats cold cereal six days a week. I measure out a small portion and top it with a sliced banana and a half cup of milk. This morning I was looking at the ingredients on the three boxes of cereal in the pantry and all three had sugar as the second ingredient. These are plain cereals which don't even taste sweet to me: Rice Chex, Corn Chex and Cheerios. I suppose the really sugary cereals have sugar as the first ingredient.

Today I plan to weigh in at Weight Watchers for January and get my voucher for two free months of etools. If my old leader is back, I may stay for the meeting. Otherwise, I'll probably just leave and go back home to work on taxes. I'm trying to finish up the fourth quarter of expenses for the business.

  1. I am telling you, the more I read about cereals the more it makes me uneasy.

  2. Cold cereals never keep me full for long! I also want twice the amount they call a serving.

  3. I've quit cereals for just that reason.. I don't want to start my day with sugar!

  4. I very rarely have cereal, but if I do I try to make it some kind of granola with very few ingredients, and I mix it with fruit and (non-dairy) yogurt. That way it keeps me fuller longer.

  5. I love cereal. Puffed Wheat has no sugar. Nor does Weeties. We eat Weetbix which is low in sugar. We have started having a concoction of equal amounts of oats and milk soaked together overnight with a couple of chopped dates, a pinch of dried coconut and 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of dried nuts and seeds. Add banana next morning. It is so delicious and filling.

  6. Uncle Sam cereal has no sugar either and the have other brands in their Erewhon line that are extremely low in sugar so your husband may like those as well.

I've seen on people's blogs where they make Greek yogurt - have you tried that?

  7. The only thing I miss about cereal (as well as oatmeal) is the convenience of it ... but I really feel much better not having either and will continue to stick to that. The amount of sugar in cereals is just shocking!

  8. My husband loves the uncle Sam one too. We buy it at Walmart or Trader Joe's and it's not too pricy. I've occasionally added a scoop of it to my yogurt and found it's SO filling. I've never just eaten it as a cereal though, but he does and loves it.

  9. You should email Chobani - I once emailed them to say that I loved their product, but it was too expensive - and now they send me some for free - and I don't even have to ask!

Last week they sent me an email asking if January 14 was a good ship date - they have new flavors for me to try - doesn't hurt to ask!
