Some things don't change for those of us who battle the scales. "At goal" never means the work is done. We continue to do the same things that helped us lose the weight initially.

So Much Produce -- So Little Time
My grocery cart is usually mostly full of produce and sometimes I buy a little more than we get around to eating in the week. If I see I'm in danger of losing some of it, I'll cook it up to prevent that.
Saturday, I was looking for rutabagas and a turkey breast specifically because I got hungry reading Leigh's post about said items. They only had about five rutabagas and they were very large. I got one anyway and that thing weighed more than a pound and a half when we checked out. It will take me a while just to cut that sucker up!
I also got a three pound bag of small sweet potatoes for only $2. They are quite small which is good and one will make a nice serving. Tomorrow I'll be baking a pan full of them.
In addition to the items already mentioned, we got two zucchini, four tomatoes, six bananas, a bag of frozen okra, mushrooms and a lemon.
Yesterday we went to another grocery store to purchase more produce not available at the first store. I got romaine, a red pepper, apples, a watermelon and some frozen mixed vegetables because Kroger sent me a coupon for a free bag of frozen veggies. Yes, I do love free.
I just noticed that this is my 500th post. I think I'll celebrate with a couple of small tangerines. :)

Yay, 500th post!! :) Congrats!
ReplyDeleteI have never had a rutabaga. What do they taste like? I love when you shopping card it full of healthy fruits and veggies.
ReplyDeleteThey taste similar to turnips to me but maybe a little sweeter. I was looking on Wikipedia because I saw a lady in the UK calling them Swedes. They said that was short for Swedish turnip. Interesting, huh?
DeleteOK, but I also have never had a turnip either. Our Weight Watcher leader suggested we try a new veggie we've never had before. I guess now I have 2 different ones to pick from.
ReplyDeleteTurnips are easier to cut up and cook but are stronger tasting. I saw on the UK lady's site that she cooked her rutabaga whole in the microwave because they are hard to cut like butternut squash. I will probably not do that. :)
DeleteCongrats on the 500th post!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 500th post! :)
ReplyDeleteI buy a lot of produce too, but I should take notice of what you're doing because I find myself having to throw things away more often than I like!
Congrats on your 500th post!
ReplyDeleteI spend way more on produce than I do on meat. I have to be careful not to overbuy because it all looks so pretty! :)
We have a local produce store with 3-lb. bags of sweet potatoes for $0.99. I'd already bought some small roasting potatoes, and I was kicking myself because I'd have loved to have had these.

ReplyDeleteOpps...made a mistake, so will repost...
ReplyDeleteI went shopping yesterday and bought sweet potatoes. Only here in my part of Australia I got a 2 pound bag for just under $3. And they were small too. It cost more to get the bigger ones loose. I love sweet potato. We eat it as a savory vegetable here. PS Thank you for your kind words on my blog.
I love rutabagas I usually boil and then mash them!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 500th post.
Congrats on your 500th post! I have been having rutabagas or turnips mashed for lunch (during the week mostly) with grilled chicken for most of my weight loss. I have always loved it and was happy when I found out it had 0 WW points.
ReplyDeleteHi Caron - I throw away too many vegetables that don't get used up in time. I am really bad with avocados. Too green one day, too ripe the next. Congrats on 500:)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 500 posts! That's quite a milestone:) As for the rutabaga. It stays well for a while if you half it and wrap the other half up. I only use half at a time. So yummy in the curried chicken...and with sweet potatoes mashed up with a bit of olive oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy:)
ReplyDeleteHappy 500th post! Your vegetable talk is getting me hungry!
ReplyDelete:-) Marion
I love your posts. :) Here's to 500 more, Caron!
ReplyDeleteI love shopping for produce at BJs, particularly sweet potatoes. They sell them in a mesh bag and they're pretty tiny, which I like and so do the kids. Often the ones at the supermarket are as big as a softball, and take way too long to cook & it's more than any one of us can or should eat.
Happy 500th post :)
ReplyDeleteThere was an appalling selection of vegetables at my local supermarket yesterday ... I'll have to try another one to get a few much needed vegetables!
